About The

Project

A sustainable textile production company experiencing a period of rapid expansion requested a unique and robust platform for in-house use, combining features of warehouse management and CRM systems. Lionwood created a custom solution to perfectly match the client company’s idiosyncratic work culture and mode of operations, providing each user role with clear workflows within the system. Among the chief functionalities were the possibility to track and certify material origins, control movement of textiles on a granular level and track expenditures by operation.

About the

Client

The client company is an expanding business driven by a vision of making sustainable clothing into the new normal across borders. Careful textile material sourcing and principles of fair trade, as well as ecological awareness, are among the company’s main values. Their operational model involves mitigating the inevitable expenditures linked to their vision by means of a unique system of workflows and special attention to process transparency, allowing them to function in multiple countries across Central and Northern Europe, both within and outside the EU.

THE

Business Challenge

As the company was undergoing expansion, they faced the need to reconcile the scaling process with their operational model. In practice, this meant they needed a highly customizable solution that would allow for multiple user scenarios integrating functions of WMS, CRM, and accounting software within a single platform. Lionwood’s main task was to develop a robust system that would function as something more than a standard textile WMS, allowing each of the users to perform their part of the workflows. To this end, Lionwood provided a team of 4 developers to work with the project manager on the client side, releasing the software as a minimum usable product (MUP) as soon as possible, and then building further features on top.

OUR

Project Goals

1

Create a multifunctional system that allows to control the entire textile production lifecycle, as well as procurement and sales functions

2

Allow for configurable user roles and permissions to facilitate workflows and ensure data security at the same time

3

Implement document management functionalities

4

Ensure robustness and scalability for future expansion

5

Implement database integration and allow the users to view the data at both granular and “big picture” levels

6

Eliminate the need for third-party systems in the mid-term perspective

Warehouse Management Software Solutions

The resulting platform was easily rolled out and fully adopted within the organization in several weeks, with subsequent additions to the functionality whenever requested. The solution withstood the challenges of further scaling, as the company expanded their operations in 3 new countries, and contracted new vendors. Full expected ROI was reached by year 2 post-launch.

Implications

  • For organizations where workflows and operations are part of know-how, implementing a custom platform that allows to foster these best practices can be preferable to purchasing out-of-the-box solutions.
  • In projects that require custom development of features that mirror the needs of each department, client-side feedback is a higher priority than anywhere else, and this level of feedback can be achieved by close collaboration and iterative MUP-based approach.
  • .NET retains its potential as the means of creating robust systems combining functionalities that are traditionally associated with different types of software.
